Phone got wet: what to do in the first minutes (and what definitely not)

With a wet phone, the first minutes decide. What you do straight away has a bigger effect on the outcome than anything we do afterwards in the workshop.

Do this immediately

  1. Switch the phone off. Immediately and completely — not into sleep mode. Electricity and water together destroy circuits. If no current flows through the phone, the damage is much smaller.
  2. Do not charge it. Not even if it seems to work. Plugging it in is the fastest way to turn a repairable phone into an unrepairable one.
  3. Remove whatever can be removed. The case, the SIM card, the memory card. Open all the trays.
  4. Wipe it on the outside with a soft cloth and lay it on its side so that water can run out of the connectors.
  5. Bring it to a repair shop as soon as possible. Ideally on the same day.

Do not do this

  • Do not switch it on to “see if it works”. This is the most common mistake and the most common reason why a phone can no longer be saved.
  • Do not dry it with a hairdryer or on a radiator. Heat damages the battery and the glued joints, and hot air drives moisture deeper inside.
  • Do not put it in rice. Rice does not draw water out of a phone — it is a myth. On the contrary, rice dust gets into the connectors and makes the situation worse.
  • Do not shake it. You would spread the liquid over the surface of the motherboard where it had not reached before.

Why speed matters so much

The problem is not the water itself but corrosion. Water — especially if it contains salt, sugar or minerals — starts to eat away at the contacts and joints on the motherboard. This process continues even when the phone is switched off and looks dry on the outside.

That is why a simple rule applies: a phone brought in on the day it got wet can almost always be saved. A phone brought in after a week very often cannot.

Sweet drinks, coffee with milk and sea water are worse than clean water. They leave conductive residues that cause short circuits even after drying. With these it pays to hurry twice as much.

What we do

We take the phone apart, disconnect the battery and clean the motherboard in an ultrasonic cleaner with a special solution that removes the residues and stops the corrosion. Then we dry the device, check the individual circuits and replace the damaged components.

After the diagnosis we will tell you the real chance of saving it and how much the repair will cost. If the phone cannot be saved, we do not charge for the diagnosis — you pay the fee only if you decline a repair that is possible.

And what about “waterproof” phones?

Certifications such as IP67 or IP68 mean resistance under laboratory conditions with a new phone. Seals, however, age over time, and after every fall or after a screen replacement they may no longer seal as they originally did. If your waterproof phone fell into water and started to behave strangely, the same rules apply as above.

Need a device repaired?

We do not charge for the diagnosis if we carry out the repair — nor if the device cannot be repaired. If you decline the repair, the diagnosis costs €39 incl. VAT.
