Phone or tablet won’t charge? You may not need an expensive repair, just a proper cleaning

“My charger is not working, it falls out of the port and only charges when I press the cable in. How much will a replacement cost?” Customers come to us with this problem almost every day.

Most people’s first thought is that the connector is destroyed and an expensive repair awaits them. In a large share of cases, however, the problem is much simpler.

The invisible enemy in your pocket

We carry our smartphones around all day in trouser pockets, jackets or bags. The charging port (whether USB-C or Lightning) acts like a small magnet for fine dust, textile fibres and dirt.

Every time you plug in the charger, you push this dust deeper and deeper to the bottom of the connector. Over time it forms a hard, packed layer. The result?

  • The end of the cable does not go in all the way to the bottom.
  • The charger slips out by itself and does not stay in the port.
  • Charging keeps dropping out or does not work at all.

The solution while you wait (and without replacing any components)

Many people try to clean the connector at home with a needle, a pin or a toothpick. Be careful, though — a layperson can easily bend the delicate pins inside or cause a short circuit, destroying the connector for good.

When you come to us with this problem, we first inspect the port under professional light and a magnifying glass. If the connector is mechanically undamaged, we safely remove the accumulated dirt using special tools and procedures.

It takes only a few minutes, we do it while you wait, and your phone starts charging like new again — without paying for new parts and without unnecessary intervention in the device.

When does it need replacing after all?

If the pins in the connector are damaged, bent, corroded after contact with water or physically broken off, cleaning will not help. In that case we will inform you fairly and agree on a professional replacement of the part.

A final tip: if your charger does not hold in the phone the way it used to, do not force it and do not try to poke around in it with metal objects. Stop by for a quick diagnosis — you will often leave within ten minutes with a fully working phone.

Need a device repaired?

We do not charge for the diagnosis if we carry out the repair — nor if the device cannot be repaired. If you decline the repair, the diagnosis costs €39 incl. VAT.
