When it is time to replace your phone battery (and how to tell)

The battery is the only part of a phone that wears out simply by being used. So the question is not whether, but when you will replace it.

Why a battery ages

Lithium batteries have a limited number of charge cycles — usually 500 to 1000. One cycle means discharging and charging the full capacity, not a single connection to the charger. With normal use this works out at roughly two to three years before the battery drops to 80 % of its original capacity.

Five signs that the battery is wearing out

  1. The phone does not last a day, although you use it the same way as before.
  2. It switches off at 20 or 30 percent and, once connected to a charger, suddenly shows 25 %. The battery can no longer deliver enough current and the phone shuts down to protect itself.
  3. The percentages jump — from 60 to 35 in a few minutes.
  4. The phone heats up even in normal use.
  5. The back cover or the screen is lifting. This is serious, see below.

How to check the battery condition

iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You will see the maximum capacity as a percentage. Below 80 %, the system itself recommends a replacement.

Android: it depends on the manufacturer. Samsung has diagnostics in the Members app, other brands in a service menu. If you cannot find it, we will measure the battery condition for you as part of the diagnosis.

Swollen battery: do not put it off

If the back cover or the screen is lifting, the battery is swelling. Stop using the phone and do not charge it. A swollen battery can push out and damage the screen and, in extreme cases, poses a fire risk. Do not pierce the battery and do not try to remove it yourself.

The same applies to laptops and MacBooks — there a swollen battery can lift the trackpad and bend the chassis.

How to extend the battery’s life

  • Do not leave the phone at 100 % for long periods. Ideally keep it between 20 and 80 %. Newer phones have an optimised charging feature — keep it switched on.
  • Avoid heat. A phone on the dashboard in summer ruins the battery faster than years of normal use.
  • Do not leave it discharged to zero for long periods.
  • Use a good-quality charger. Cheap no-name chargers deliver an unstable voltage.

How the replacement works

For most phones it is a matter of tens of minutes and your data stays untouched. We use original or quality-verified batteries and give a 24-month warranty on the replacement.

Book an appointment or simply call us. We will measure the battery capacity and tell you whether replacing it already pays off or whether it can wait. If we replace the battery, we do not charge for the diagnosis.

Need a device repaired?

We do not charge for the diagnosis if we carry out the repair — nor if the device cannot be repaired. If you decline the repair, the diagnosis costs €39 incl. VAT.
